2021 Ovitelli Grenache, Yangarra, McLaren Vale, South Australia

Yangarra is based in Blewitt Springs at the northern edge of the McLaren Vale. Here, the high altitude and mediterranean climate suit its mix of southern Rhone varietals - especially its unirrigated, bush vine grenache from the Ovitelli vineyard, planted in 1946. Peter Fraser is Yangarra’s highly experienced winemaker who takes a ‘low intervention’ approach in the cellar. So the process is very simple and effective. The hand-picked grapes are destemmed, crushed and fermented in 675L ceramic eggs where the wine stays on its skins for 133 days. Once off the skins, the wine is put back in the eggs for 13 months before bottling.

Pale, translucent appearance with a gentle nose of wild strawberries. The full-ish palate is sweet, juicy and tangy with impressive depth and purity. It combines red fruits (more strawberry and hints of raspberry) with hint of mint and an attractive herbal leafiness. It also wears its alcohol well and the tannins are cleverly restrained. Nice grip and fresh acidity, this distinctive and delightful wine could also be served chilled in hot climes. Drink now and for the next five years. 14.5%
