Chateau Musar 1999
When John E Fells asked Marc Hochar of Chateau Musar to host a masterclass at their annual tasting he decided to liven thing up by theming the masterclass as “From Bordeaux to Bekka valley” looking at 3 different blends from Bordeaux, South Africa and of course, the Bekka Valley. Never being frightened of a challenge, he chose Château Léoville Barton 2018 and 2010 and Mike Ratcliffe’s Vilafonté 2020 and 2011. Then two wines were served blind Chateau Musar 1999 and Château Léoville Barton 2000. I think it showed the genius of aged Musar that the wine I most wanted to take home amongst all those jewels was the 1999 Chateau Musar. Musar has the most distinctive nose of any wine I know, (great for blind tastings). A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault, on the palate there is a generous fleshy red and blue fruit, notes of cinnamon and chocolate, dried rose petals, wonderful power and depth, driving through to the very end. Everything in harmony but that wonderful exotic touch that makes Musar so very special. 14%
