▴ 2022 Primavera Vineyard Pinot Noir, Giant Steps
2022 Primavera Vineyard Pinot Noir, Giant Steps, Yarra Valley, Victoria
The vineyard takes its name from Lou Primavera who planted it in Woori Yallock in 2001. Giant Steps began to source the fruit in 2006. It’s a small vineyard on two north/south slopes of a gully where the well-drained soils produce a floral, red-fruit style of Pinot Noir.
2022 was cool resulting in lower bunch weights and berries with concentration, flavour and great natural acidity. The hand-picked grapes were fermented in small oak fermenters and stainless steel open vats. Some parcels were fermented in whole bunches; others as whole berries before blending and ageing took place in French oak 20% new and 80% old for ten months.
An intense, perfumed nose with bright strawberry notes that follow through onto the juicy, complex and extremely pleasurable palate. Lovely purity and delicacy on show with sweet, floral and red fruit and cola flavours that really tingle the tastebuds. Sure-footed and fresh, this has wonderful balance, energy, elegance and charm. Very good now, it will also age and improve to the end of the decade. 13%
