Luce 2018, Frescobaldi – Tenuta Luce della Vite, Italy

Luce was created more than two decades ago in a partnership between the Frescobaldi family and the Mondavis of California. When Mondavi sold to Constellation, the Frescobaldis took back control, but they remain close to Tim Mondavi, who was deeply involved with the initial project. The 2018 is the most elegant of the vintages of Luce I have tasted. This Merlot/Sangiovese blend has sometimes been overpowering, but the 2018 has a beautiful freshness and elegance to it, even with its 15% alcohol. Tenuta Luce lies southwest of the town of Montalcino in the heart of the Val d’Orcia Natural Park. The merlot was planted in 1976 on clay soils and the vineyard extends to 88 hectares. The nose is highly perfumed: exotic plums and hints of dark chocolate rise out of the glass. The palate is opulent, with a depth of flavour--plums and blackberries with spice are layered throughout with fresh mint notes. The tannins are velvety and there is a great tension to the wine, which has a beautiful vibrancy to it. A great Luce.
